Did you know that masks have been created for generations to represent tribal folklore?  As I was learning about Chad, Africa, I had the chance to make a mask of my own.    My assignment was to create a mask that represented symbols of Chad.  I used yellow, red, black, and green feathers on each side of the mask.  The colors do not have meaning but the feathers stand for tribalism.  Chad is a dry country so I painted the top background color of the mask the same color as tan sand.  There is a very large lake in Chad that provides almost all of their water.  Blue represents water to me so I painted the bottom half of the mask the color of a lake.  Every country in Africa has its own flag.  I painted Chad’s flag across the eye area of my mask.  There is horrible genocide of Chad’s refugees.  I represented this with flames on the left cheek.  I painted a brown cross next to the mouth area to show that there are very many different religions in the country.  The black lips of my mask are used to show that racism is a part of their community.  I enjoyed using plaster, paint, and glue to create this mask as I learned different facts about Chad, Africa.  My work is not peaceful to look at and shows that the country has great suffering.
