MALAWI

In Malawi there is about 13,603,181 people. There is no exact count, because people die every thirty seconds from Malaria, AIDS, and HIV. There is two main languages; english and chewa. Other languages spoken there are lomwe, yao, ngoni, and tumbuka. Though, they are not official they are still comonly used. They where colonized in 1980 by the Unighted Kingdom. They became independent in 1964. The goverment is not stable at all, in fact Malawi is in the top 20 poorest countries. Main religion in Malawi is christiantiy. More than 80% of Malawi's population is christian. A major tribe in Malawi is Chewa. Indigenous tribes make up only 5% of the total population. The health care is really low, because no one has money to pay for it ,or anything. They have BIG problems with HIV, AIDS, and Malaria. Malaria being the bigest. Even though it is the easiest to cure, the medicine costs alot. The climate is tropical. It never really gets really cold.

Hopeful Tears

I am the warm heart of Africa.
I hear the sounds of laughing children as they watch an old tire roll down a road.
I see lake Nyasa and the innumerable fish that swim in its depths.
I understand that almost one million people are afflicted with A.I.D.S. and H.I.V.
I want disease to vanish from the land.
I am the warm heart of Africa.

I feel the pain and joy of every individual.
I touch the hearts of those who walk into my charming forests.
I smell the malnourishment and pain that have stained my skin with fatigue and tears.
I worry about the immense number of my people that suffer and die of starvation.
I cry when people despair from loss of their loved ones.
I am the warm heart of Africa.

I say I am a peaceful country, but can this be true if so many suffer?
I dream of a healthy nation, that will not know hunger, nor pain.
I try to produce enough nutrients to nourish my barren land.
I hope the day will come when all are at peace.
I am Malawi.

Artist Statement

There is a place where a warm heart beats and music is played through a rich culture, this is a place known as Malawi. On my mask I placed a lush forest with a beautiful blue sky and clouds. The forest represents the splendid scenery of Malawi while the clouds represent the hopes and dreams of the country. The cross represents Christianity being the main religion. The tears coming from the right eye represent loved ones lost. The red nose represents the high H.I.V. and A.I.D.S. problem in Malawi. The music notes represents Malawi’s love of music. The stick houses on the left represent the native Malawian culture. On the other side is a heart that represents Malawi being the Warm Heart of Africa. And last but not least the blue water represents the spectacular Lake Nyasa, Malawi’s natural gem. Now with these words I’m off.

Beauty & Struggle

Malaria kills at least one person EVERY thirty seconds. Leaving sobs of sadness.

HIV and Aids kills at least one person every day.

Nonetheless, tourists come from all over just to see and touch my gorgeous green-blue water from Malawi Lake.

 Just to feel my soft white sand that surrounds my water.

That also, sticks too laughing kids wet feet.

 Citizens love their president, even though they struggle with kwacha and deaths.

 Everyone wishes that they could find a priceless way to cure this killing spree caused by diseases.

Combined aromas of fresh tobacco, sugar, and coffee fill the air.

Blowing the sense of victory through the air.

Bringing murmurs of excitement that another shipment had been made.
